Menopause is that time in the reproductive phase of a woman where by the levels of circulating Estrogen diminishes to such low levels as to cause physical, psychological and sexual symptoms. menopause can be considered to be an “oestrogen- hormone deficiency ailment” in women. One has to be prepared mentally well in advance. Therefore, it is necessary to counter the symptoms of menopause, namely hot flushes, sweatings, headache, backache, arthritis and weight gain, wisely.

Menopause brings with it low self-esteem and a series of distressing disorders.Physically, estrogen deficiency can cause the following: 1.Osteoporosis, 2.Heart diseases and coronary artery diseases. 3.Neuro-degenerative atrophic changes of the urino-genital organs which lead to poor control of urine, diminished libido, and other sexual problems. 4.Arthritis, muscular degeneration, lower gut colon cancer.

Menopause is manifested in the form of vasomotor instability, resulting in complaints like irritation, hot flushes, sweatings, palpitation, depression, frequent headache, backache, tiredness, insomnia, weight gain, paraesthesia, loss of appetite, a sensation of pins and needles in the extremeties, fibrositis and osteoarthritis(a form of arthritis in which the cartilages of the joints and adjacent bones are worn away).

The cornerstone of management of menopause has been Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT.) However HRT should be practised under expert guidance only.If not done properly it can have side-effects

a woman undergoing menopause should change her lifestyle for the better.This involves stress management, taking up hobbies according to personal choice, giving special attention to diet, and adjusting calorie intake according to one’s daily activity. The most solid piece of advice I can give on how to manage your Menopause is sadly not startling news, but eating healthily and getting regular exercise is very important.
