Rosacea: Facial Complication Leading to Premature Aging

Anti-aging and beauty products are in abundance online and in local retail stores.  For many women, with dermatological skin disorders, finding the right balance in beauty products is often quite difficult.   For women suffering from rosacea, a bacterial disorder of the skin, beautifying the skin can become increasingly difficult.  Understanding the cause and origin of rosacea, the methods for diagnosing rosacea and the treatment options, will ensure women suffering from this facial skin disorder are well on their way to more beautiful and glowing skin.

With an unknown origin, rosacea most often occurs in individuals with a pre-existing or genetic disposition to the disorder.   Without regard to gender, rosacea most often presents in women beginning at age 30.  Attributed to the enlargement and irritation of small blood vessels in the underlying skin of the face, rosacea is believed to be a bacterial infection creating an appearance of small pustules in and around the facial area.   For many female sufferers of rosacea the condition is chronic and requires regular maintanence.

For women who suffer from rosacea, the common factor to progression of the disease is in lack of diagnosis and treatment.  Becausae rosacea tends to disappear, as inflammation decreases, many women assume the rosacea is simply a case of adult acne.  Too often, this delay in diagnosis may attribute to progression of the rosacea in and around the face.  Diagnosing rosacea is done through visual examination by a dermatologist with no other testing required.   Because the condition is believed to be attributed to a bacterial infection, rosacea is commonly diagnosed by a dermatologist’s visual inspection of the facial skin.

If positively diagnosed with rosacea, the dermatologist will begin a standard regimen of rosacea treatment including the use of a topical antibiotic cream, gel or lotion.  This topical prescription is believed to improve the origin of rosacea by destroying the bacterial infection.  When not successful in the treatment of rosacea, the dermatologist may opt to couple the topical antibiotic cream with an antibiotic oral medication in an effort to further enhance the reduction in inflammation and redness while destorying bacterial infections.  Additionally, the dermatologist will provide dietary recommendations including decreasing alcohol and caffeine intake and a limitation on the consumption of spicey foods.  With treatment as simple as cream application and dietary modifications, many women wish diagnosis and treatment would have come sooner.  When left untreated, rosacea may lead to progressively worsening skin conditions and progressively impact the entire face resulting in premature aging.

A disadvantage to rosacea treatment lies in the adverse reactions to the initial use of the antibacterial topical cream, gel or lotion.  Such side effects may include further irritation in which the skin may become dry and itchy.  While this may be an indication of the bacterial correction, dryness and irritation which lasts more than two days should be addressed by the dermatologist as such irritation could represent an allergic reaction to the topical antibacterial product.

Following a dermatologist examination, application of topical antibacterial medications, in addition to oral antiobiotics, the woman suffering from rosacea should see a significant improvement in the skin.   This, coupled with periodic cleansing facials, will improve the overall look of skin and decrease redness and slow the aging process.  For more information regarding rosacea treatment, visit www.rosacea.org.
