What is Reflexology? Should you consider it for longevity?
In reflexology, manual pressure is applied to specific areas of the foot that are believed to correspond to different organs or systems of the body. Stimulation of these areas is believed to eliminate the blockage of energy responsible for pain or disease in the corresponding body part. Reflexology may help relieve anxiety in people who have cancer.
Reflexology, or zone therapy is an alternative medicine involving the physical act of applying pressure to the feet, hands, or ears with specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques without the use of oil or lotion. It is based on what reflexologists claim to be a system of zones and reflex areas that they say reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands, with the premise that such work effects a physical change to the body. A 2009 systematic review of randomized controlled trials concludes that “The best evidence available to date does not demonstrate convincingly that reflexology is an effective treatment for any medical condition.”
The Reflexology Association of Canada defines reflexology as:
- “A natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet, hands and ears and their referral areas within zone related areas, which correspond to every part, gland and organ of the body. Through application of pressure on these reflexes without the use of tools, crèmes or lotions, the feet being the primary area of application, reflexology relieves tension, improves circulation and helps promote the natural function of the related areas of the body.”
Common criticisms of reflexology are the lack of evidence for its claimed effects, or of a scientific or demonstrated basis for its theories, of central regulation, accreditation and licensing, or of medical training provided to reflexologists, and the short duration of training programs. As with other pseudosciences without any proven effect beyond placebo, if patients rely on them and delay or even reject effective medical treatment there can be significant health risks.
Reflexology differs from ordinary foot massage in that it works through the nervous system applying the techniques to the reflex points in the hands and feet.
Reflexology it is safe, effective, natural, easy available and simply-to-use treatment option for a variety of health problems, the stress-related health problems included.
Reflexologists believe that various organs, nerves, and glands in the body are connected to “reflex areas.” These reflex areas are found on the bottoms of the feet, hands, and other areas of the body. When done properly, reflexology is believed by therapists to:
- relieve stress and tension
- stimulate deep relaxation
- improve the blood supply
- bring balance to the entire body
- increase energy
- balance your emotions
- improve your blood and lymph circulation
- relieve your aches and pains
- tension headache relief
- constipation relief
