Can good dental hygiene boost your longevity?

Can good dental hygiene boost your longevity?

Is longevity important to you? How does oral health fit in with longevity? Ok, not all of us want to live to a ripe old age. For those of us who do, we know what to do, don’t we? We know there is not just one strategy or magic bullet. We also know that even though people are living longer, we are not necessarily healthy and we are being propped up by the medical industry.

Somatic Stem Cell In Anti-Aging Therapy

The somatic stem cell theory of aging gains much attention in the scientific community recently. Adult or somatic stem cells (SSC)are the multipotent undiffrentiated cells found in adult tissues. SSC has the capacity to generate (all) the cell types of certain organ/tissue (blood, skin, intestnal tissues) from which they are derived through cell division, potentially regenerating the entire organ from a few cells. Stem cells (and progenitor cells) functions as a repair system for the body, replenishing specialized cells/tissues, and also maintain the normal turnover of regenerative organs. SSC functionality is implicated in human aging and cellular senescence. Recently more and more evidence suggests that the genetic and biochemical alterations and decline in differentiation capacity occure in somatic stem cells (SSC) when we age. With aging the population of adult stem cells declines and the rates of differentiation into somatic specialized cells also declines, thereby reduce our ability to replenish tissue cells. SSC cell senescence and the decline in differentiatoin contribute to the all ageing phenomena—tissue deterioration (reduced capacity to regenerate injured tissue) , susceptibility to cancer and cardiovascular disease and increased propensity to infections. Hence(Somatic) stem cells have great potential and implications in regenerative medicines for treating age-relalted deteriorations.

Classical stem cell therapies based on using other people’s bone marrow stem cells for treatment of leukemia has been in routine use today. The more practical approach to stem cell therapy is to reintroduce autologous (a patient’s own) somatic stem cells back into the body to avoid problems of immune system rejection encountered when other people’s stem cells are used.

It may still a long way to go before good news for longevity treatment using SSC since there are reports of failure and cancer development in patients who was subject to stem cell therapies in clinical trials. However, small-scale experiments are beginning to show the power and potential of this simple, inexpensive and non-invasive techniques to clear up formerly intractable diseases.

The Importance of An Anti-Inflammatory Diet For Seniors

The importance of an anti-inflammation diet cannot be overstated. Many nutritionists, health researchers, and physicians have come to agree that chronic inflammation is one of the root causes of many illnesses in today’s society. Inflammation causing foods are everywhere, and the typical diet is getting in the neighborhood of 25 to 30 times too much inflammation causing fats versus anti-inflammation fats, such that are found in omega 3 fish oil. How serious is this imbalance? Many opinions are that it is one of the most significant causes of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. It is literally killing many people.

Inflammation is a normal response from the body to repair damage, such that is caused by injuries like cuts and abrasions. The expansion of blood vessels allowing for white blood cells to do their work gives the body its ability to heal. Similarly a response happens when LDL cholesterol attaches to arteries, and when inflammation is overactive it triggers swelling and constriction to blood flow to and from the heart. In many cases this will lead to heart disease or attacks.

The diabetes and inflammation relationship is a result of chronic inflammation advancing certain proteins called cytokines, which in turn reduce the body’s ability to regulate the creation of insulin. Being overweight is often associated with type 2 diabetes. One of the primary reasons many people are overweight in the first place is a diet with far too much inflammation causing fats found in omega-6 fats and oils such as corn oil, sunflower oil, and safflower.

Cell oxidation is the result of damage caused by abnormal amounts of inflammation. This can result in cell mutations leading to cancers.

These are wide spread problems, caused to a large degree by poor diets over a prolonged period of time. Omega-6 pro-inflammatory fats are in a startlingly high number of processed foods, but absolutely over abundant in fast foods found on almost every main street in America. While at the same time, anti-inflammatory foods are almost nowhere to be found. Fortunately a good tread is happening lately, and that is omega-3 anti-inflammatory fatty acids being introduced into food products. Look for omega-3 on the label.

With a proper balance of omega-3 to omega-6 fats the body is able to regulate inflammation, allowing it to produce a normal response resulting in substantially better health. A typical healthy diet should minimize the intake of omega-6 fats, and maximize the intake of omega-3 fats.

One of the best ways to get omega-3 is regular consumption of fish. The fats in fish are high in the two primary omega-3 fats that are essential to getting the fat balance back to where it should be. The two fatty acids are EPA and DHA, very strong anti-inflammatory fats. Nutritionists recommend eating fish twice per week. If that is not possible or desirable, good fish oil supplements can be used. Fish oil supplements have the additional benefit of being purified, whereas fresh fish has trace amounts of mercury and other toxins that may be of concern when being consumed on a regular basis. Fish oil supplements allow for control of quantity and provide a certain assurance of quality. Depending on who you listen to, the recommended daily amount of fish oil is often between 750 milligrams, to about 2000 milligrams. While about 1000 milligrams is the typical recommendation for a healthy individual. Don’t take greater amounts without consulting with your physician. If you have any known health problems, consult with your doctor prior to taking fish oil, as your doctor may have particular recommendations.

Cut down on fats that cause inflammation, such as trans fats, or vegetable based cooking oils. Replace them with oils that are high in omega-3. Some good fats are those found in fish, as well as extra-virgin olive oil, expeller pressed canola oil, as well as flaxseed oil. This is one of the key things that you can do to greatly improve your health, ridding your diet of excessive amounts of unhealthy fats.

Get plenty of fruits and vegetables, especially dark green vegetables. These provide fiber, are loaded with anti-oxidants, as well as anti-inflammatory. Whole grains and other natural and plant based foods are very helpful (not vegetable oil).

Reducing the amount of processed foods, including artificial sweeteners and white sugars is a great way to improve the health of a diet in general.

Following these diet recommendations can greatly improve your health by getting the omega-3 to omega-6 balance back in order, and reducing harmful inflammation within the body.

Antioxidants As Drugs Against Aging

One of the earliest classes of substances put forward seriously as drugs against aging are the antioxidants, Vitamin E and BHT being the most well-known. Antioxidants As Drugs studied include the following: BHT, ethoxyquin, DDC, Vitamin E, MEA, Diaminodiethyl DS, NDHGA (nordihydroguaretic acid).

Of all the drugs we have considered, the two best prospects as antioxidants against aging are probably NDHGA and BHT. For human use against aging, we lack all knowledge of just what dosage will give the same effect on aging in human beings as the doses given to mice affect their aging. As with the other antiaging drugs, the best suggestion would be to assume an increase of dosage by the 2/3rds power of body weight.

Baby Boomer’s Ultimate Anti- Aging Concepts – 5 Radical Tips

By Ray Page

Many of us “Baby Boomers” are each beginning to feel our age, and we’re starting to live it too. Every morning, clock radios everywhere announce the start of another day. As a typical boomer rolls out of bed, an old ache, pain, and/or little worry makes its presence known, just like the day before. The same beverage — coffee, tea, or maybe even caffeinated soda — is ingested in an attempt to energize the same tired face reflected in the morning mirror.

By the time we hit our 50’s, we may have feelings that our lives are not as they could be. Yes, there are pills, and many varieties of the “quick fix”’ (also called the “Life Makeover”) — everything from creams to diets and Botox injections, perfect-sounding and easy “fountains of youth,” for ourselves. Let’s face it , most of us are looking for ways to slow the ticking of our biological clocks.
I’m here to tell you that in order to really slow that clock down, we must get “radical” in our approach to controlling our processes; getting radical means that we can, in the words of Star Trek character Jean Luc Picard, “make it so”. We can literally make our own clocks tick more slowly.

Getting radical is a process that occurs within ourselves. First of all, it’s the power of our intentions and the measure of our wills. It’s saying to ourselves — with conviction — “I want this to be!” Next, it’s believing, strongly, that we can! When we commit ourselves to these beliefs, we are then capable of achieving many remarkable accomplishments of mind and body. All we have to do is to challenge ourselves and our perceptions of who we are. The five radical tips follow:

1. Firewalking: How does walking on fire relate to youthing? An art that’s been practiced in many cultures for thousands of years, firewalking is about mind/body transformation. Its goal is to” question” the laws of nature. The experience becomes a powerful metaphor for anti-aging — which I refer to as youthing — and it’s a very radical way of challenging ourselves to stretch beyond what we think is possible. I have participated in dozens of firewalks, and the experiences taught me more about myself, and about questioning nature’s laws as they applied to me, than I’d ever thought possible. Oh — and I walked on fire.

2. Breathwork. This is a simple yet profound yogic breathing technique that has a cleansing and healing effect at all levels of our awareness — physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental. It’s the quickest method available that can aid us in healing from previous traumas, negative belief systems, and unwanted “baggage” that many of us unconsciously carry around with us.

3. Fasting. As I write this, I have just completed a four-day fast. (How could I talk my talk without walking it?) Fasting is perhaps the most powerful tip for youthing. Many of us, especially in the U.S., literally eat ourselves to death. Note: there are many types of fasts and many reasons for fasting. It’s wise to check with your health care practitioner before fasting.

4. Physical Immortality. Now here is an idea whose time has arrived. Let’s imagine this concept: “Life without death is pure life.” When we do this, we’re unraveling our personal death urge, which dwells somewhere inside us in that place where pain, aging, and negativity also dwell. While I realize this is a radical idea, relax. We really don’t have to buy into this idea; in order to let the concept work its magic, we just need to be open to it.

5. Hypnosis. As Deepak Chopra has written in AGELESS BODY TIMELESS MIND: ”Aging seems to be something that’s happening to you, when in fact it is something your body has largely learned to do. It has learned to carry out the programming fed into it by you, the programmer” (Harmony Books, 1993). Hypnotherapy is simple, very effective, and can be fun, depending on its purpose; and whether a hypnotherapy session is done in person or by phone, it sets the stage for stretching beyond set limitations. Hypnosis is the art of placing the conscious self in a state of heightened suggestibility. During this time the unconscious self is very open to change and can literally set aside any limiting beliefs that may have been interfering with one’s ability to change.

It’s a proven fact that our bodies are constantly creating new and healthy cells to replace old and damaged ones, and every new cell gets its “replacing” instructions from the DNA contained in the old cell. So, it stands to reason that if our DNA programs our new cells with the healthiest and youngest information possible as a blueprint for development, the body’s cell memories will change. This process is called “Cell Transformation”. The question arises: Can hypnosis really be a powerful tool to us in order to literally tell our bodies cells to be younger? From my experience, I believe the answer is yes.

My conclusion is that over 14 million hits on Google for “mind/body connection” can’t be wrong. From my own personal experience I am pleased to report that indeed my quest for youth is paying off. Now at the “calendar” age of 55, except for a few silver hairs I both look and feel not much over 35 years young.

Stem Cell Supplements – Does It Mean A Longer Life – What You Need to Know

What You Need to Know

By Lisa Wright

Stem cell supplements are here to stay – they are the way of the future.

Medicine and science has come an awfully long way. Dr Oz said that in the last 12 months we have made a 10 year leap in stem cell technologies. In his words he described this breakthrough as “truly amazing”.

Scientists are now predicting that the average human will easily be able to live to 120 years of age by 2050 in a very healthy state. This statement is only possible due to the huge amount of medical and scientific developments being made with stem cell research. You may not be aware – but our own “adult stem cells” (those within our bodies from the day we are born) are fundamental to our overall health and wellbeing, how and when we age.

Smoking Could Raise Risk of Death Rate (39%) in Women With Breast Cancer

(HealthDay News) — Breast cancer patients who smoke or previously smoked have a higher risk of dying than nonsmokers with breast cancer, new research finds.

“Women who were smokers or had a history of smoking had a 39 percent higher rate of death due to breast cancer,” said study author Dr. Dejana Braithwaite, an assistant professor of cancer epidemiology at the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of California, San Francisco. Their risk of death from other causes was also elevated, she said.

The findings are to be presented at the American Association for Cancer Research’s annual meeting on cancer prevention research in Philadelphia, which runs through Wednesday.

Previous studies looking at the relationship between active smoking (as opposed to secondhand smoke) and survival among women with breast cancer have produced mixed findings, she said.

“The strength of our study is, it’s a very large study of over 2,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer” at two sites in the United States, she said.

For this study, Braithwaite followed 2,265 women of many ethnicities, all diagnosed with breast cancer between 1997 and 2000, for nine years on average. The researchers looked at whether smoking affects breast cancer-related death rates and death rates from other causes.

During the follow-up, 164 women died of breast cancer and another 120 from other causes.

Besides a 39 percent higher rate of dying from breast cancer, the smokers and former smokers had an even higher rate of dying from other causes — twofold — compared to never smokers. Past smoking was defined as having smoked 100 or more cigarettes in their lifetime.

Looking at subgroups, Braithwaite found that the women most affected by smoking were those with tumors known as HER2 negative, those of lower body weight, and those past menopause.

The link can’t be explained definitively, she said. One possibility is that the chemicals in tobacco smoke can make breast cancer more aggressive. But the assumption is, the longer one has gone without smoking, the less the risk, Braithwaite said.

In the study, 893 were former smokers, 173 current and 1,199 never-smokers.

“Their study is important,” said Daniel Wartenberg, a professor of epidemiology at the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, N.J. He previously studied the effect of passive smoking on breast cancer death rates and found no link.

If these findings are confirmed by other studies, he said, “that’s a really important message, that getting people to stop smoking and prevent exposure may have a significant effect on reducing cancer deaths.”

Scientists made blood from human skin cells — a breakthrough method in regenerative medicine

Scientists turn skin cells directly into blood cells

a breakthrough method in regenerative medicine

Scientists at McMaster University discovered an alternative way to make blood – all it takes is a fingernail-sized piece of skin to produce enough blood for a transfusion.

The Canadian researchers turned skin cells into blood, a breakthrough that could usher a new way to treat cancer and other blood disorders such as anemia. Giving patients a transfusion made from their own cells would eliminate the chance of the blood being rejected.

The Anti-Aging Benefits of Sex

The fight against premature and unnecessary aging entails a holistic approach. You can’t count on exercise without the proper diet and nutrition as well as the proper attitude, frame of mind and certain anti-aging products to aid in the pursuit of longevity and youthfulness. One aspect that may be easily available to us that is a great way to stay young and healthy is a regular and healthy sex life.
One of the major causes of premature aging and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles is stress. With stress we become depressed and our body doesn’t function at its optimum levels. This is why stress must be eliminated to be able to achieve a successful anti-aging lifestyle.

Sex is a wonderful way to release stress and with its ability to clear the mind and boost the circulatory system, it is also great at keeping depression away. It can’t be denied that sex improves health greatly and its benefits include results that help anti-aging regimens find success. Studies show that among its many merits, sex is a form of pleasurable exercise. Used as such, it can help burn calories that increase the metabolism and help maintain weight. Proper weight maintenance ensures the continued health of our bodies and this keeps us youthful and staves off premature aging translated into fine lines and wrinkles from skin that has lost its elasticity.

Because it is a great and pleasurable exercise, it helps increase physical energy and stamina that allows us to engage in more activities that aid us get more out of life. Just like all aerobic exercises, sex increases oxygen supply to cells that are needed by the body for it to be able to perform all its important physiological functions.

It can also reduce bad cholesterol levels in our system and this keeps our heart healthy and young. A young body is translated into a youthful outward physical appearance. Last but definitely not least, there are important hormones that the body secrets during sex which is known to promote longevity, regeneration and provide us with an overall pleasant feeling for holistic management of aging.
With all these reasons and fantastic benefits, a regular and healthy sex life should be an important component to any anti-aging regimen. Combined with proper nutrition, outlook on life and other important anti-aging products, sex can help maintain youthfulness and health.

Unwholesome Lifestyle Hurt Memory

If you are a caregiver and the person to whom you are providing care exhibits memory difficulties, treat those memory problems as a flashing yellow light. However, do not automatically assume Alzheimer’s disease (one form of dementia Alzheimer’s disease) is the likely diagnosis. Memory loss and dementia may have other causes such as infections, head injuries, and alcoholism. When memory difficulties occur, always consider lifestyle a possible factor.

An older adult’s memory challenges (and that can include the caregiver and/or the person to whom care is being given) may be tied to his or her lifestyle or everyday activities.

Memory abilities are enhanced by:

  • eating a colorful, nutrient-dense diet
  • getting a good night’s sleep
  • choosing to do adequate daily physical activity and exercise
  • practicing non-smoking behaviors
  • managing one’s use of alcohol
  • finding opportunities for cognitive (or mental) stimulation
  • making social connections.

Medications can negatively affect memory. Get advice from your pharmacist about the possible effects of certain prescription medications on memory. The ones most likely to pose difficulties are sleeping pills, anti- anxiety medications, allergy medications, pain medications, and anti-depressants.

If memory loss is complicating your caregiving responsibilities, take a close look at lifestyle. Consider your diet and be sure it focuses on eating a nutritionally sound breakfast and healthy snacks throughout the day. Look at sleep patterns. If you are unable to get seven- to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep each night, devise a plan that allows you to sleep well at least a few nights a week and look for opportunities to take short daily naps. Assess the amount of daily aerobic exercise you get — and then increase it. Think about smoking or alcohol use – both can negatively affect memory ability. On the other hand, mentally stimulating daily activities such as solving crossword puzzles, or playing word games, as well as socializing with friends and family, can have a positive impact on memory.

Lifestyle affects memory. Remember that.
